Increasing Black Homeownership: Coalition Partners Present 7-Point Plan

The Coalition for More Housing Choices is part of a network of associations and organizations who have been working since March to formulate a strategy to close the homeownership gap between Black households and white households in the Puget Sound region. On Tuesday, Oct. 5, several partners presented the Seven-Point Plan to Increase Black Homeownership in the Puget Sound Region at the Housing Washington Conference.

The Black Homeownership Initiative seeks to align interests and resources that focus on equity, infrastructure development, housing production and preservation, and underwriting and lending. Four workgroups have been meeting this year to discuss discrete objectives and strategies that could lead to doubling the Black homeownership rate in the next two decades.  The objectives and strategies identified by the workgroups constitute the Seven-Point plan that was presented this week and which is categorized in the following seven focus areas:  Marketing and Outreach; Pre/Post-Purchase Counseling; Purchase Support/Tools; Credit and Lending; Housing Production; Policies and Practices; and Sustaining Existing Owners.

Thank you to Darryl Smith of HomeSight, Patience Malaba of Housing Development Consortium, and Carla Moreira Stickland of JP Morgan Chase for presenting the plan at Housing Washington, Denise Rodriguez of the Washington Homeownership Resource Center for moderating the session, and to everyone involved in the four workgroups active in this effort.
