“A strong, livable and vibrant community contains a range of housing options to ensure that residents of all ages, backgrounds, income levels, and ability levels can find housing that meets their needs. Some older adults experience housing problems resulting from high housing costs, inaccessible home design features, disrepair, or all three. These problems can reduce physical safety, increase isolation, and prevent people from “aging in place” and in their homes and communities. Policies should be enacted to protect and expand the availability of affordable, accessible, safe housing, particularly for those with the most severe cost burdens.”

“We live in an era of uncertainty and insecurity; we live in a world beset by an environmental health crises and we live in a time of reckoning with and reconciling our history of social injustice. 

Considerate choices in the delivery of affordable housing cannot be disconnected from the context of our current confluence of wealth imbalance, climate change impacts, and social/political unrest. Engagement in problem-forecasting is critical in the evaluation of what we embrace in proposals for comprehensive solutions to our collective dilemmas. Our situation is often the consequences of unbridled capitalism, carbon emissions, and systematic inequities. Without acknowledging historic and recent missteps, we face the real possibility of repeating enduring errors.

I am an advocate for a social justice focus in choices for housing. I support proposals that do good, while doing well. If problem resolutions do not share mutual benefit for all, then they are subject to relentless opposition and reversal. The times we live in demand change that will last. To sustain change requires commitment beyond the momentary anxieties. We need to make cool-headed decisions with proposals and actions that are not charitable, but widely compelling, where the reciprocal societal value is easily apparent.”
